Second Life: Online Game or Social Replacement? - The Bottom Line

Forget the rest of the package; at its heart, Second Life gives users the unique opportunity to blend fun and function, business with play. Succeed at the game and you’re doing a little bit more to succeed at life, right? When it comes to your personal business interests, what can SL do for you?

At the end of the day, games are just games and your career is still the force behind all your ambitions. But what if you could blend the gaming you’d like to do with the work you’ve got to do? Use Second Life to its full advantage -- use it for self-promotion.

In the business world, reputation is everything. Word of mouth can take you far, and it’s one of your strongest marketing tools. Have you started to make a name for yourself in the SL world? Is your business booming, your blog bouncing, your name recognizable? Use it!

Many, many Second Life sites, magazines, newspapers and blogs thrive in online -- the same Internet everyone else uses. When your SL endeavors are displayed online, offer up a link to your real-world site as well (and vice versa). You never know when the business contacts you make in SL might help you further your personal career goals.

By blending the two lives, you can take advantage of one of the greatest marketing tools known to man: cross-promotion. Drive some of your Second Life traffic to your first life site (and vice versa), and you’ll end up driving more and more business your way.
