    Is a Mac Really More Expensive Than a PC? - Basic Laptops

    (Page 4 of 4 )

    Now it is time to move on to a comparison of the laptop models. In this case, even though there is more than one option, we are only going to look at the most basic of choices, which is still a pretty good option for most of the users out there -- provided, that is, that you do not plan on editing feature films on it or anything else that would qualify as high stress use.

    The specifications on the Macbook are:

    *13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen display

    * 2.0GHz or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed

    * 1066MHz front side bus

    * 2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 4GB

    .0GHz MacBook

    * 160GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive4

    8x slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

    Cost: $1,299.00

    In order to get yourself a similar Windows-based machine you are going to have to go with something like this:

    Gateway® P-7801u

    Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor1 T5550 (1.83GHz, 667MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache)

    2048MB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2-1024MB modules)

    160GB 5400rpm Serial ATA hard drive

    Intel® GM965 Chipset featuring Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

    Cost: $849.00

    I won’t take up your time with interpreting for you what is already obvious. We are all smart here. When it comes to desktops, the Windows systems can be more expensive, but when it comes to a laptop the Mac’s are more costly.

    So now that you have some information on hand, you can make an informed decision with your money. Education is one of those things that can always help you with making the right choice for your life, and who knows? You may find yourself becoming a hybrid user, with a Mac desktop and a Windows laptop.

    As you may have noticed in the course of this piece, the specifications are not identical in every way. Quite frankly, this is because the expectation that I would find an exact part for part match is more than likely impossible. I am getting as close as I can while still staying within the bounds of sanity.
