The biggest news this CES came out of the Palm camp. I can't even remember the last time they had news worthy of the front page of any tech site, unless it was negative. This was not the case this year.
The Palm Pre was a well-kept secret; many people speculated that it would be a new phone, but no one had any details for sure. Palm has been on its last legs and looked like a company that wasn't going to make it through the year, but the Pre might change things.
The Palm Pre looks capable of going head-to-head with the iPhone, T-Mobile G1 and the many different Windows Mobile devices. This device is nothing like any of the recent Palm devices; it's small, sleek and powerful. It has a touch screen as well as a banana sliding keyboard.
The Pre will run Palm's new OS, called WebOS. It is pretty much what it sounds like, an interface that runs on HTML, CSS, and XML. Palm says anyone that knows how to program with any of these can make applications for the Pre. I, as well as many other people, would like to give Palm a warm round of applause and say welcome back to the game. Look for this to be a huge hit when it comes out. Price and availability are not yet known.
Sony P
Sony has always had some pretty cool computers, but also some pretty expensive machines. They have had the slimmest and smallest devices around for a while, but with the netbooks flooding the market, Sony was getting washed up.
The P series is a small netbook-like computer. It runs on the Intel Atom CPU, like most other netbooks. The interesting part here is the keyboard and size. The keyboard isn't the standard size, but does take up the whole bottom portion of the device. The trackball gives you the mouse. It's made to fit in your pocket, though I don't know how many people put computers in their pocket. It looks like a tasty little device, but not sure it's going to fit into my budget any time soon.
