Apple iTV: Amazing News or All Hype?
When Steve Jobs announces something new at Apple, people listen. Most of the product news at his mid-September announcement circulated around changes to the iPod line, but a couple of smaller items stole the show – including one product that won’t even be out until next year. Keep reading to find out what all the excitement is about.
Some of the announcements were anticipated and perhaps even necessary improvements to the iPod line. The battery life on the video-capable iPod has been seriously improved; it can now play for 6.5 hours. The screen is also 60 percent brighter. And those of us who never seem to have enough storage space (even digitally) will be pleased to hear that the video iPod now comes in a 30 GB model for $249 and an 80 GB model for $349.
For those who like a colorful world, the new Nano is a pleasant surprise; in addition to the standard black and white, you can get it in blue, pink, green, silver, and with an aluminum chassis (but the colors you can get vary with the amount of storage, as does the price). And the Shuffle is back, boasting an aluminum chassis, for $79. But all that strikes me as a bit of window dressing when you look at one of the possible reasons behind the improvements for the video iPods.

That's right, Apple has started selling full-length movies in its iTunes store. Currently, there are only 75 movies available, but you can bet that number will grow. "In less than one year we've grown from offering just five TV shows to offering over 220 TV shows, and we hope to do the same with movies. iTunes is selling over one million videos a week, and we hope to match this with movies in less than one year," Steve Jobs noted.
