Nokia 5800 Xpress Music
You wouldn't expect a cell phone nicknamed the Tube to be very promising, would you? Well, that's the name being affectionately applied to the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music cell phone. Expected to hit the streets early this year, it boasts a touch screen, which puts it in direct competition with the Apple iPhone. Let's see if it can give Jobs' pet a run for the money.
Most of us can only wonder what it must be like to be Steve Jobs. Like all of us he must suffer the occasional sleepless night, and it would be fascinating to know what thoughts occupy his mind in the small hours of the morning. Does he lie awake congratulating himself on being the visionary responsible for countless cultural icons, from the original Mac OS to the iPhone? Or does he curse those with half his imagination, the ones who slavishly follow in his footsteps, recycling and repackaging his innovations for the popular market?
The Nokia 5800, fine piece of hardware though it is, will inevitably attract criticism for being an iPhone clone. It’s quite simply impossible to avoid the similarities: a touch screen cell phone built for media playback and delivered in a sleek black package built to impress. It isn't exactly ground-breaking. The major difference between it and its illustrious rival is that Nokia has substituted much of the iPhone’s sheer charisma with sensible practicality. But at an expected price of around $300 unlocked, the reality is that few besides Jobs and existing iPhone owners will be complaining.
