Fujifilm Finepix S1000fd - Performance and Image Quality
(Page 3 of 4 )
I was excited to try out the Fujifilm S1000fd in the field, because I know that the Fujinon lenses have a reputation of taking quality photos. When it comes to both performance and image quality, I found the S1000fd to excel in some areas, while falling a bit short in others.
In regards to the speed of this camera, I found it to be acceptable, although not stellar. Using the “sport” mode, you can take pretty good shots of moving objects, and the camera does a nice job of hastening the shutter speed to reduce blurriness. You can set the camera to “high speed” mode, which is basically the same thing as “sport” mode. You also have the ability to slow down the shutter speed to take cool photos of moving objects, such as a waterfall, to get a cool soft effect. In these situations, though, a tripod is essential to get good results.
Image quality was impressive in some cases, but not in every situation. In good lighting, this camera takes phenomenal 10 MP photos. If you enjoy taking lots of outdoor/nature shots, this would be a great camera for you. Using the “beach” setting, I was also able to take some nice shots at the beach that were crystal clear and very accurate. I also enjoyed taking excellent macro shots with this camera, which is in large part due to the ability to crop in close using all of those mega pixels. This camera takes outstanding sunset photos as well.

Where this camera falls a bit short is when lighting isn't ideal, such as at dusk when it's not quite dark enough to use the flash. While this camera is capable of reaching ISO levels of 3200, at these high levels photos are basically worthless. My testing showed that anything above ISO 200 started to show signs of image noise. At ISO 400 or above, a noticeable amount of noise is visible, especially when cropped into the large 10 MP photos.
The image of the turtle is a photo that was taken at ISO 800, and you can see a noticeable amount of noise in this case. While these results are pretty common in other camera models, especially 10 MP cameras, it's still a little disappointing, since this camera takes such great photos in good lighting.
