The Drive Way - Laptop Drive Installation
(Page 10 of 10 )
You can use any laptop hard drive inside your desktop or server by using a 2˝- to 3˝-inch desktop adapter. This unit comes with an adapter that creates the standard 40-pin connector and a male Molex power connection. There are two primary reasons for using laptop drives. They are rugged, designed for mobility; and although they are slower than standard hard drives, run a lot cooler, too. The reason, obviously, is space. (I do not recommend using a laptop drive as your primary drive.)
To install a third hard drive, pull out another blank from the
5˝-inch bays.
Slide in the 3˝-inch hard drive, with attached 5˝-inch bay
adapters.
Secure the hard drive in place with four screws.
Replace the blank cover on the bay.
Insert a PCI IDE controller card into an open PCI slot.
Plug in the cable from the third hard drive.

Testing 1-2-3:
- The floppy drive is, usually used for maintainability purposes after the initial hard drive installation.
- The CD/DVD-ROM drive, typically used for installing software, and a DVD-ROM drive can also be a shared device, much like a printer.
- The primary and secondary IDE controllers on the motherboard will only hold a maximum of two devices in each, one as master, and one as slave.
- You can add SCSI drives to a motherboard, with an open PCI slot, using a SCSI host bus adapter, or additional IDE devices using an IDE host bus adapter.
