US Open second round live updates, leaderboard: Thomas Detri rises as Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau continue

It’s a story as old as a fourth-grader, one golf fan knows all too well: Rory McIlroy and the search for the elusive Major 5. It is in its 10th edition, dating back to 2015. After winning the 2014 Open and PGA Championships, McIlroy targeted a career Grand Slam and a fifth major victory at Augusta.

Nearly a decade later, he’s still searching for both. Naturally, that was the narrative again today as he began the second round of the US Open with a share of the lead. McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay both shot 5-under 65 Thursday to take a one-shot lead on the field.

McIlroy, like many others in Friday’s early wave, stuck in there. He finished with a 2-over 72, thanks to a bogey at the end, which kept him within two shots of the lead when he hit the club.

Although McIlroy faltered a bit, Thomas Detry was caught. He tied with Cantlay at 5 under quickly after making a turn thanks to a huge putting day, then took a solo lead on the back nine. Bryson DeChambeau stayed in the mix after the start of the roller coaster as well. He stuck his approach on the 18th next to the cup for a final birdie, moving him to 4 under for the week.

Cantlay will go on a flurry of the afternoon, as he will attempt to maintain his lead up the pitch. Tiger Woods is in the late wave as well, although he will need a strong day to make the cut after a tough opening start. The top 60 and leagues will make it to the weekend. Scottie Scheffler, who has been dominant all season, looks at his first missed cut in 672 days.

Sepp Straka hit his first hole of the week at Pinehurst on Friday morning.

  • Bryson is in a great place

He’s now two shots off the lead after his second round, but history is on Bryson DeChambeau’s side.

  • Thomas Detry takes the lead

He left his eagle putt short, but that set up a very easy look for Thomas Detri’s birdie on the fifth. He is now the solo leader at the US Open.

  • Bryson finishes strong

This was a big finish for Bryson DeChambeau. He finished 18th to finish first under 69, moving him up to second place entering the club.

The afternoon wave was about to take off, but DeChambeau was just a shot back.

  • Scottie Scheffler will likely miss the cut

Scotty Scheffler just finished with a 4-over 74, which drops him to 5-over for the week. It was his third straight round above par, something that hasn’t happened since 2020.

If he can’t sneak into the weekend with some help from the afternoon flurry, he will miss his first cut in 672 days.

  • Rory McIlroy drops 2 again

Rory just made an even putt on the ninth, so he’ll end the day with a 2-over 72. Not great, considering what he posted yesterday, but he’s still two shots away from a shot entering the club.

  • Wild recovery for Sam Bairstow

Sam Bairstow shot a 14-over 84 to start the US Open on Thursday.

Today he jumped 17 shots With 3 players under 67. This corresponds to the largest improvement from first round to second round in a major tournament in the past 40 years.

  • Scheffler birdie free?

Not only is he trying to make it through the weekend, Scotty Scheffler is still looking for his first bird today at Pinehurst.

  • Scottie Scheffler doubles and doubles down to 5

I know Busby is kidding here. i know that. But at this point…

Scotty Scheffler just doubled 5, and is now in 5th place. He hasn’t missed the cut anywhere since 2022.

  • Batch cut Viktor Hovland

It will take a little longer, but Viktor Hovland is giving himself a chance to make it to the weekend. He is now over 5 years old, outside the expected line of 3+ years.

Remember, it’s the top 60 ties and ties that make the cut.

  • Bryson is back at it

After an up-and-down start, Bryson DeChambeau appears to be back on track. He has now made back-to-back birdie putts to get to 4 under, leaving him tied with Rory McIlroy once again.

  • Tyrrell Hutton’s bad luck

Tyrrell Hatton couldn’t have gotten that close to the trophy. And well…

  • Xander closed

Xander Schauffele is still two shots off the lead with five holes remaining, but he came out firing this morning at Pinehurst.

  • What happened so far…

Since most of the early wave turns there, here’s what we got:

    – Xander Schauffele bounced back from two bogeys to open his round and move closer to the top of the leaderboard thanks to five birdies. He’s got a ride today so far.

    – Rory McIlroy is hanging tight. After dropping a few putts, he got to 4 under, with just one putt.

-Scotty Scheffler still looks weird. He earned 2 overs from his tour and 3 overs from the tournament.

-In general, the course is played a little easier in the second round than in the first round. The big question: How will it play out when the afternoon wave, featuring captain Patrick Cantlay, hits the course?

    – The current line (top 60 and ties) will be +3, which means that Tiger Woods (+4), Adam Scott (+4), Dustin Johnson (+4) and others have some work to do. This also means that Scottie Scheffler (+3) cannot afford to lose any more shots.
