Two Ukrainian soldiers were stabbed to death in a shopping center in southern Germany on Saturday evening by a suspected Russian national, German and Ukrainian authorities said.
German police say a 36-year-old man died at the scene in Murnau, and a 23-year-old man died later that evening in a nearby hospital.
The two Ukrainian men were residents of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region and were in Germany undergoing medical rehabilitation.
A 57-year-old suspected Russian national was arrested at his home near the scene, according to German authorities.
A criminal investigation is underway into the suspected double murder.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry issued a statement containing similar information.
“On April 27, two Ukrainian citizens, born in 1987 and 2001, were stabbed to death in a local shopping center in Murnau am Staffelsee, Bavaria, Germany.
The ministry said: “According to preliminary information, the deceased citizens were military personnel undergoing medical rehabilitation in Germany.”
