Lionel Richie cancels sold-out Madison Square Garden show, cites bad weather – Deadline

The dog ate my homework. The check is in the mail. Traffic is backed up.

Add “severe weather” to your list of classic excuses.

Lionel Richie and Earth Wind & Fire canceled Saturday’s sold-out Madison Square Garden show an hour after it started.

Richie borrowed a page from Milli Vanilli and blamed it on the rain. He claimed he was unable to fly to New York due to bad weather.

The show was already an hour behind its expected 7:30 p.m. ET debut when it was postponed, leaving a bitter 20,000 people, many of them out of town whose travel and hotel expenses have been restricted.

“Due to severe weather conditions and my inability to land in New York and the surrounding areas, I cannot attend the show tonight,” he said. Tweeted at 8:31pm

“I feel so upset. We are rescheduling the show to Monday August 14th. I can’t wait to show you all. Tickets for tonight’s show are valid for Monday’s show.”

Earth Wind and Fire is scheduled to play a show At Hartford HealthCare Coliseum in Bridgeport, Connecticut, without Ritchie on Monday. It is not clear if they will make the rescheduled New York date.
