A Leeds United fan has been charged with assault after walking out of the technical area and shoving Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe at Elland Road on Saturday.
Howe was shoved in the closing stages of Saturday’s 2-2 draw between the clubs, after which he issued Leeds Lifetime ban on the pro.
After confronting the Newcastle boss, the fan was escorted away by security.
“Police have charged a man with assault and entering the field of play following an incident at the Elland Road football ground during the Leeds United v Newcastle United football match yesterday,” West Yorkshire Police he said on Twitter on Sunday.
The man was released on bail to appear before magistrates on July 21.
When speaking to BT Sport about the incident after the match, Howe said: “That was a real surprise. I was concentrating on the match. It was the last thing you thought could happen.”
He added, “I can’t repeat what he said, but it makes you think ‘What if?'” “
“It was personal to me. I can’t remember if he pushed me or not; it was just a weird thing to happen. Moments like this make you think. We need to be careful.”
“No one should feel their personal safety violated when trying to entertain country. I had no time to be afraid; it was over in a flash. But it got me thinking things over afterwards.”
Leeds took the lead in the seventh minute through captain Luke Ayling before Callum Wilson scored two first-half penalties to put Newcastle ahead. Leeds managed to salvage a point late on through defender Rasmus Christensen before Junior Firpo was sent off in injury time.
Leeds is still in the relegation zone, but it rose one point to 18th place with 31 points, one point behind Everton in 17th place, while Newcastle remained in third place in the table with 66 points.
