Jimmy Kimmel says ABC executives were terrified of John Cena skeet

iHeart Podcast Awards 2024

Jimmy Kimmel returned to his day job on Monday to give people a fun dissection of the Oscars — especially the part where John Cena hid his private parts while handing out the Best Costume award.

After a quick spoof by Justin Timberlake — who first took to the stage of the ABC late-night show to say he was filling the night — Kimmel appeared and immediately began recounting his favorite moments from Sunday's Oscars ceremony. (Timberlake is tonight's musical guest.)

He was tickled by the way Arnold Schwarzenegger said Godzilla and enjoyed Ryan Gosling's rendition of “I'm Only Kane,” but the highlight was when the Oscar star's 50th anniversary was honored in 1974.

“Putting this on the air… in all the times I've hosted the Oscars or the Emmys or anything, no comedy segment has received more scrutiny than this,” Kimmel explained. “There were meetings, on-site meetings, emails, texts, phone calls, people sweating. Someone was crying. Then once they realized we weren't going to take no for an answer… there was an intense discussion about the envelope.”

Kimmel then showed the envelope the brass wanted Cena to use, which was basically the size of a shoebox. In the end, Kimmel and his team went for the smaller envelope, which hid the unmentionables from Cena just fine.

“I would like to say congratulations to John Cena,” Kimmel said. “The buzz it caused. Rarely does an idea succeed in literally crossing the boundaries, and this one did.”
