Former San Antonio Spurs psychologist sues team and Josh Primo, alleging sexual misconduct

“I am a clinical sports psychologist; I am a mother of four wonderful daughters. I am a woman, and I am a victim,” Cauthen said on Thursday.

According to the lawsuit, Cawthen first raised her concerns about Primo’s behavior with GM Tottenham Brian Wright in January 2022. Cawthen first met Wright on March 21 and continued to express her concerns about Primo, expressing to Wright that she was uncomfortable meeting with her. Primo alone, the lawsuit says.

After meeting Wright, Cawthen claims she continued to invite her to visit Primo. Cothen met with Wright again in April to express her frustration and concern that no action had been taken, according to the lawsuit. Wright asked Cawthen “what consequence” she wanted to happen, and Cawthen replied that she felt it was up to the team to address the situation, the suit says. Then Wright informed her that the organization’s legal team would be in touch with her.

According to the lawsuit, in May, Kawthar met several times with lawyers from the Tottenham organization, including the Deputy General Counsel as well as the Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel, and promised an investigation. At this time, Cauthen was instructed to avoid contact with Primo and was told the team was preparing a “writing”.

A week or so later, after requesting an update on the status of the investigation, Deputy General Counsel Brandon James and Head of Human Resources Kara Allen told Cauthen that Primo would continue to be involved in the team’s activities and suggested Cauthen work from home, according to Fit.

In June, James and Allen revealed that they had spoken with Primo, the lawsuit says, and suggested having a conversation with Primo to address his behavior. Cothen refused.

At a meeting later in June, James and Allen Cawthen reported that the franchise was considering a “corrective process to report incidents in a timely manner.” They also told Cawthen that head coach Greg Popovich “was aware of her complaints and accusations and that he “wanted to do it right.”

Tottenham, who could not immediately be reached for comment, Primo gave up last week. He played four games this season, averaging 7.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game on 34.6% shooting from the field.

Released by William J. Briggs, Primo’s second attorney, issued a statement Thursday, defending the charges against his client.
