The Israeli army said that eight Israeli soldiers were killed in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday, in one of the bloodiest incidents to hit its forces since October 7.

The IDF told CNN that the incident is under review, and various possible causes are being considered.

But earlier, the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, said that it “carried out a complex ambush against enemy vehicles” operating in Tal al-Sultan, west of the southern city of Rafah.

The armed group said that it targeted a military bulldozer, causing it to catch fire, killing and wounding its crew. When rescue forces arrived, they struck an armored personnel carrier, killing the soldiers.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said Saturday was “difficult.”

He said in a post on the X website: “Eight of our best sons were killed in Rafah. Knowing the price, they entered Gaza courageously to complete the mission of destroying Hamas and freeing the hostages.”

The incident comes as Israel continues its incursion into Rafah, where reports of air strikes and artillery shelling have been received since dawn local time.

Ahmed Radwan, media official at the Civil Defense in Rafah, said that they had received appeals to collect the bodies and injured people, but it was difficult for civil defense crews to reach the area.

Some of the heaviest fighting in recent days has been seen in Tal al-Sultan.

Hamas said on Friday that its fighters targeted Israeli tanks in the neighborhood with rocket-propelled grenades and mortar shells, while the Israeli army said it found tunnels between neighboring homes used by militants as corridors.

Elsewhere, at least 14 people, including seven children, were killed in Israeli raids on central Gaza, according to the Gaza Civil Defense Directorate.

In total, 30 people were killed and 95 others were injured in the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

The conflict in Gaza began after Hamas attacks on October 7, which killed about 1,200 people. Since then, at least 37,296 people have been killed in the Israeli assault on Gaza, according to the latest figures from the Gaza Ministry of Health.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
