Costumes at the coronation ceremony: what the guests wore

Choosing the “right” outfit to wear to any royal event is of the utmost importance, and few moments can be more historically significant than the coronation of a new monarch.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s classic dressmaking heritage

Much has been said about breaking with tradition for the coronation of King Charles III and extending to the guest dress code. Gone are the requests for attendees to wear oversized robes or ceremonial attire in favor of a more relaxed look.

However, members of the royal family arrived in traditional regalia. The Prince of Wales was dressed in the uniform of the Welsh Guards, while the Princess of Wales looked radiant in formal robes – she wore an ivory silk crepe dress by Alexander McQueen punctuated with silver bullion embroidered roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrock motifs symbolizing difference. The respected British designer is a fan favorite in Wales. Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen since 2010, created Kate’s stunning wedding dress in 2011. First Lady Jill Biden wore a blue Ralph Lauren skirt suit with a coordinating hair bow and was accompanied by her granddaughter Finnegan Biden in an elegant faded yellow cape dress by Markarian, in what could be seen as a clothing gesture to show solidarity with Ukraine. Inside the convent, the couple sat next to Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska in an icy blue dress and coat.

British actress and “Love Actually” star Emma Thompson arrived at the ceremony wearing a red monochrome rose-print coat by Emilia Wickstead, donned with the Dame Commander in Chief of the British Empire (MBE).

How Princess Diana’s style legacy continues today

Perry was accompanied by British Vogue’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, who arrived in an icy blue waistcoat and polka dot tie.

Next came world leaders, politicians, and international members of government. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau was seen braving the rain on his way to Westminster Abbey. His wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, cut short the gray weather in a blush-colored satin dress with organza sleeves. Akshata Sunak, wife of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak – who arrived in a classic morning suit – opted for a matching cornflower blue suit.

Princess Anne appeared in heavy military uniform with a golden braid to perform her role as “golden wand in waiting” responsible for the personal safety of the King. No stranger to the military uniform, Anne is a colonel in several international regiments.
