“Comet” foldable Pixel surfaces, possibly Fold 2 or Pixel Flip

It looks like this summer’s Pixel Fold won’t be Google’s last foldable Android phone, as new evidence points to a new device in development that could be the Pixel Flip or Pixel Fold 2.

About APK Insight: In this APK Insight post, we break down the latest version of the app that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we unpack these files (called APK files, in the case of Android apps), we are able to see different lines of code within those that hint at potential future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ship these features at all, and our explanation of what they are may be incomplete. We’ll try to enable those that are close to being finished, however, to show you what they’ll look like when they charge. With that in mind, read on.

In the latest version of the Google Pixel Buds app, released today, the company includes preparations for this fall’s Pixel lineup, including the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, codenamed “Shiba” and “Husky,” respectively.

Besides those well-known Pixels, our team has discovered another device with the code name “Comet”. Right now, details are still a bit scant on what specifically the comet has in store, but we can think of a few things.

For starters, we know that Comet likely isn’t part of the Pixel 8 generation (including the Pixel 8a), because it doesn’t use a dog breed as a codename (even though Comet was the on-screen name of the dog). Full house). As another example, the Pixel Fold (originally codenamed “Passport” before multiple iterations) was eventually codenamed “Felix” because it was updated to run on the same Tensor G2 as the Pixel 7 series (“Cheetah” and “Panther”). .

Likewise, it has been reported that the Pixel 9 series will use codenames associated with reptiles, such as “Komodo” and “Caiman.” Thus, with its unique codename, we currently believe that Comet will be separate from the typical annual Pixel release cycle.

Digging into the code of the app that comes with the Pixel Buds, Dylan Russell discovered that Comet is built into the Pixel Fold, and the app even calls it a “fold.” Note the number 7 used in the two pieces of code shown below, while the number 6 refers to the Pixel Fold (Felix).

Given that the Pixel Fold is only a few months old at this point, it’s not clear to us whether the Comet is an early setup for the Pixel Fold 2 or whether it’s our first sign of a Pixel Flip to match Samsung’s pair of foldable styles.

What do you want to see from Google’s next foldable phone? Do you prefer the Pixel Fold or the Pixel Flip? Let us know in the comments below!
