Brandon Beane: The $255 million salary cap saved the Bills, and we were preparing to cut it

The NFL's announcement last week that the 2024 salary cap would be $255.4 million was welcome news for the general manager of a team who is currently over the cap.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane, whose team is currently about $40 million over the cap for 2024 with a few weeks to go, said: BFT Live It's a huge relief that the cap passed $255 million, when Bean was preparing to make roster moves to get below $245 million.

“Our first challenge is to eliminate and limit the cap,” Bean said. “I was excited to see it at 255 versus 245. We thought it would be mid-240, and we were actually conservative and counting a little lower. When I heard it would be closer to 250 to 240 I thought that's good, maybe it will be 248. It pops up at 255 and saves you. Maybe You have to release or restructure a lower man.

Beane said the Bills want to keep as many good players as possible while they have an elite quarterback, Josh Allen, in his prime. But he said he also doesn't want to put the Bills in a position where they spend too much trying to win now that they're in an impossible salary cap situation in future years.

“You don't want to just issue a credit card to everyone and just stack them,” Bean said. “At some point, it's due, so you try to balance it out. I don't want to go into 2025 or 2026 and say, 'We have $112 million to unload, how are we going to get into the season?'”

The Bills still have some tough moves to make to reach the cap this season, but the higher cap makes that work a lot easier.
