“There’s a real tragedy going on, the tragedy is that there are politicians in this country, starting with Donald Trump, who lied to the American people. The people were betrayed. He kept saying the election was stolen when it didn’t happen,” Cheney said in a debate televised by Wyoming PBS ahead of the Aug. 16 primary.
He added: “We now accept the cult of personality. I will not be a part of it, I will always stand for my truth, I will stand for the truth.”
Cheney went on the attack early in the debate, pointing out that Hackman’s campaign had hired the consulting firm of former Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien. Stepian noted that Cheney was happy to be part of “team normal” in the 2020 election, as Trump and some of his allies began spreading lies and conspiracy theories about voter fraud after Trump lost the 2020 election.
“I’m interested to know whether or not my opponent, Mrs. Hackman, wants to say here tonight that the election was not rigged. She knows it wasn’t rigged,” Cheney said.
However, doing so would cost Hackman Trump’s endorsement, Cheney said. “If she says it’s not stolen, he won’t support her,” the congresswoman said.
Hackman made several false claims about the 2020 election, citing the movie “2000 Mules,” which mentions donations from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, and exposes conspiracy theories about ballot boxes and “Zuckerberg money.” , to help local election officials with the coronavirus pandemic.
