Are you sure that this is possible? The two chips being from different generations and all... i thought the 9800 series was only capable (hardware restrictions) of having 8 pipes, so soft modding wouldnt do anything...?
i could be wrong but that just seems like the logical thing... i also found no informaion while googling... got a link?

well "officially" the mobile 9800 used the core dubbed the M18, which many believed was derived not from the R350, but from the R420, aka X800. The mobile x800 is officially dubbed the M28. Physically examing the card will likely reveal both using their given name, and most likely samsung 2ns or 2.5ns memory modules. The 2 cards physically look different also, and not just cooling system, the PCBs are different. Though it may be possible that the modern M18 is just a rebadged and cut down M28, the likely hood of a simple soft mod turning a mobile 9800 into a mobile x800 are slim...and odds are it wouldnt even be stable under load, mobile 9800 runs at 350/300 where as the mobile x800 runs at 400/400 and the mobile x800 pro at 475/450, so I really doubt stock cooling of any laptop using the mobile 9800 could take the extra 4 pixel pipelines and 2x vertex shaders, ontop of a 50mhz/100mhz or 125mhz/150mhz overclock, to turn it into a true mobile x800/pro.
with laptops, modding and overclocking are not the best of ideas, if you want a mobile x800, buy a laptop with a mobile x800.

basically the theory is that the first 30 or so weeks of production have 16 pipes but they are disabled with a laser cut
pics1 mod pics no bios hack needed, bridge the cut and your in business. thread1 thread2 ati tools showing mine to have ddr3 memory also default speeds of 350/297 are really conservative for this chip without a single degree increase in temp under load or at rest i was able to achieve 436/415 uping my 3d mark5 to almost 3800 what do you pros think of all this? well it works, im showing 12 pipes now, running benches as we speak. I looked into this back around august for a friend with a M18 that was capable of a high overclock. We both thought it was strange, Ive dealt with mobile 9800s before that were poor overclockers. So I looked into possibly being a mobile x800, but found very little credible information. At the time all I was able to come up with was guess work. It was discussed that certain cards would be moddable, but it was not all revisions, and like you said, some specific production weeks have a high success rate.
Im not saying its impossible, im saying if you dont do your research, dont even bother. I am happy to see how far you've looked into it so far, just keep on the same path and then come back and teach me somethin ![]() |

9800 mobility? unlock pipelines? overclock?
can the 9800 mobility really be unlocked to have more than 8 pipelines? this forum thread is the only search result I found about this. also... i was wondering where i could find typical overclock results for this chip so I don't push it too far
thanks |
