Geforce 8400M GS - Clocking advice please

I'm looking into overclocking my Geforce 8400M GS using Rivatuner2.06 and forceware driver 169.04 - (can't seem to o/c with 169.09 - ??)

Before any clocking at all i'm getting over 1500 in 3Dmark06 which i think is pretty respectable but have seen people claiming well into 1800's.

My only concern is gpu temp in my laptop (17" HP Pavilion). With no o/clocking its happily below 70 at all times (average at around 68) - i'm planning to experiment and keep my temp below 80.
Would this be too high?? - I know many people say not to o/clock these mobile cards at all for risk of gpu or other component damage - Or could i even push more??

Any advice would be really helpful. Also if any other drivers may be better? Thanks in advance to all.

You cannot overclock on that driver for a 8400 mobile chip. I have personally tried. It is very similar to what occured with the 6200's on the desktop market. Nvidia blocking them out.

Trick is to just go back to a old driver. I belive 101.11 is the one i use and that goes just fine.

I personally have a sony vaio with a 8400m gt in it. Stock clocks = 450mhz core / 700mem

Overclocking on that driver, i can reach 700 core / 800mem. Performance increase is significant as you would expect. Remember to monitor temps, and your doing this at your own risk!

have fun

- Paul

I gave it a shot and am rather pleased with my results! ..

Was able to o/clock using 169.04 - using a modded .inf file from laptopvideo2go.com.

I incremented in stages of 10mhz and have been able to max
out my core and shader sliders at 600/1200 boosted my memory clock up to 550 (any more and my teps start to soar!) and have run 3Dmark06 on a 30 min test run at these settings to test stability.

Achieved total average of after this 30min run of 2017 3D Marks with ave temp at 74 and max load temp at 81. Running at no load in Vista with Aero switched on my temps now steady to just 64. (It was already at 57 with no clocking!).

The system seems stable enough but yet to run full in game tests. Do these temps pose any problems or should i be ok??
