Sounds like you drive needs a firmware update, but with DVD burners so cheap nowadays, I'd probably ditch the Pioneer and get a new Asus, Lite-On, or Samsung drive anyway.
The last Asus DVD/RW I bought was $35

Your writer is a bit old now so I would be tempted to try latest firmware for it. I mean if it doesnt work your gonna have to get a new one anyway, and they are so cheap these days.
You can download firmware from here

Can't tell ya how many forums I've read with users having a similar problem like this. Could be chipset related or any number of irregularities.
Instead of pulling your hair out trying to get it to work, ya might as put it back in the computer it works in, then pony up $30-$35 and get a brand new IDE or SATA burner, depending on which you prefer |

I got a spare pioneer dvr 104, does for me. Anyway, my DVR106D has the latest firmware, and I don't want to buy another DVD Drive just to find out that probably won't work. I'll check out the latest hyperions.
