This device cannot start. (Code 10)
hi ,
i just found this form when i was googling about "This device cannot start. (Code 10) " .. & i hope some one could save me before i went to one of those fancy back up $hops out there ..
it all begin when i disconnected my USB hard disk & connect a flash memory ..then disconnected it , and restart my pc .. and connect the USB hard disk .. and " windows found a new device " .. " USB mass storage device " .. "your hardware may not work probably ... " .
went to the device manger and got a yellow shaded strip over " USB mass storage device " ..
things i've try ( and didn't work ) :-
* system restore .
* change the USB cable with a new one .
* tried to connect the hard disk to another computer ( actually they're 3 ! )
* uninstall the driver and get into the safe mode trying to install it ( i thought that windows pick the wrong driver so by uninstalling it and restart it well get the right driver )

Hey I need a little help
Hey I have a seagate 100GB portable hardrive. Every time I plug it in my USB port it say that something went wrong while installing it. And in the device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark were it says USB mass storage device. It then says that it has a code 10 problem. I have tried unistalling it and restarting but nothing has worked. I have 2 USB flashdrives and they work on my computer but my 100gb PH does not. I have tried using on another computer and it works but it just does not work on my computer. Could anybody suggest anything.

Found the answer
Hey I called the USB people. They said that it is most likely that the USB port does not have enough power to power the USB hardrive. They said that computers 4-5 years old do not have a more higher powered USB port like the computer of recent and 2 years back. So if you are having problem it could be that your USB port does not supply enough power for the device that you are using.

That sucks. Get your money back. Make a big fuss about the box not saying you need a newer computer. Either you will leave with you money in your pocket, or you will be escorted out between 2 fat guys that have you in an armlock. Good luck.

He may also be able to buy an external adaptor with a plug-in power cord. This will hook into a standard USB port, and still give the external devices the extra power they need. I don't think there's a no cost soution for this.

It could be that his usb ports are wired up wrong or are v1.1 and not 2.0 like nowadays. I had the same problem with a bluetooth device on what i later found out to be v1.1 front ports.

I agree with the power issue. I have a usb keyboard that has a built in USB hub, but when I plug devices into it I get the same "device cannot start" error. I went out and bought a 8-port usb hub that utilizes an external power source and when I plug the same devices into it, that I tried to plug into the keyboard, they work fine.

I also agree with the power issue. I have updated my laptop, used the old HHD in an portable enclosure.
this worked fine on my desk top but when I attached it to a laptop it gave me a code ten, I read the
article about power and thought it make sense, and it worked great. thank you. hope this is useful.

I have the same problem
I recently purchased a 160GB WD external hard drive. It tested OK on both my desktop and laptop computers. I loaded data on the drive from a third computer. Now when I try to use the drive with either my desktop or laptop, it isn't working. It shows on device manager as yellow block with an ! in it. I get an error message "This device cannot start (Code 10)" on both my desktop computer (Windows 2000) and laptop (Windows XP). When connecting the drive to a computer of a friend, it works fine. So the hard drive must be OK. I have tried different drivers and reinstalled different drivers several times on both computers with no success. I connected directly into my USB ports so I don't think power is an issue. What happened that makes this drive unusable on my desktop and laptop computers now? Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?
