Ssd upgrade
Have later 2009 imac 27" 11,1. core i7. Don't want to attempt on my own. Micro center will install for $60. Few questions?
1. read a lot of reviews about how vertex 2 just dies within weeks. known problems?
2.I am kind of undecided on which ssd to get. OCZ vertex 2,Corsair Force,Intel X25
3.I'm also concerned if i get a dead drive and micro center installed it. then i will have to send it back to new egg. might be a problem.
4. I was thinking of just buying a ssd from micro center, but they don't have the vertex 2. they have ocz vertex and the Agility2,cosair force and intel.
would i see any noticeable speed difference with the vertex 2 compared to agility 2,cosair force, intel x25 or even the regular vertex?

what do you use the computer for? is it just a general use home computer, or are you doing heavy video editing on Final Cut or something?
reason I ask is because I don't think you'd honestly see the speed improvement with a SSD over a 7200 RPM disc drive
for what you'd pay for a good 500gb SSD, you could get multiple 500gb disc drives (granted I'm willing to bet that Mac can't have more than 1 HD installed, but I'm not sure; thus another reason I love to build my own PC's; multiple drives and RAID but I'm not going to start a Mac vs. PC dispute in here)
disc drives are tested and proven, and will last if you get a good brand one. and the average person wouldn't notice a bit of difference between a SSD and a 7200 RPM disc drive, unless you performed a read/write test and had solid numbers to compare next to each other
SSD's have come a long way, don't get me wrong, but their reliability is still nothing compared to a disc drive. and when it all boils down to it, a drive is only going to be as fast as the speed at which the computer can read from it through the cable and process the information. The i7 has no problem processing tons of information at fast speeds (I love my 920 because of that ), but what slows it down is getting the information from the HD in the first place
SSD's have their place in laptops as rugged drives, since there's no moving parts to jar around and cause read/write faults and eventually and fail. so for portable computers, their great. I just don't see the purpose of installing them in a desktop

my $0.02
I use it for internet, photo and video and watching video on the internet. My imac is held back from the 1tb hdd.I read where the performance is night and day when upgrading to ssd, from boot up to booting apps. Thats why i asked if i would notice any performance difference between vertex 2 and agility 2 or intel.

Then you wouldn't see much improvement in drive access speed.
Like bleeder said, SSD is nice for ruggedized portables, or mobile installations like carPCs, otherwise you're better off just getting a bigger, faster mechanical drive.
