NTFS & FAT(MAC OSX)

Ok, my maxtor 750 Gb NTFS external hdd is hooked up to an imac (usually use it for xp.). I was able to transfer files from the external hdd to the imac, however moving files from the imac to the external hdd doesnt work, i get the error "hdd cannot be modified" or something along those lines.
Is there any way i can change this via the imac, without completely re-formatting the external drive?
thanks

If you can get NTFS write support working on the mac, then you'll be set ... but good luck...

Otherwise, I'd just reformat as FAT32 or HFS (mac filesystem) - as there are tools for windows to read/write HFS filesystems...
