|
No airflow over 500GB HDD... problem?
Hi everybody,
Building a small form-factor pc and I want to use my existing 3.5" 500GB 7200RPM Western Digital drive. Now this case actually has the HDD in a very covered spot with NO AIRFLOW whatsoever. Is this going to be a problem for the reliability of the drive? Should I consider one of the new high-capacity 5400rpm drives, or a less capacious drive likely to have fewer platters?

Desktop drives are designed with the thought in mind that many of them will be placed into badly ventilated, seldom-cleaned cases. So it probably won't be a problem. If it does get too hot, that'll mean the temperature in the entire case will be too hot, and your CPU will crash anyway.
Usual disclaimers apply though.

Yeah you are right about that, I can always monitor the S.M.A.R.T. temp and compare it to what I'm getting now off the drive in a larger better ventilated case.
If it does seem too warm I think I will swap it for a 5400rpm, but that remains to be seen.

And set up the OS so it spins down the drives quickly when not in use...
