HDD imminant failure!!

I got this brand new Western digital 250gb HDD but when I installed it, I got something to the affect of "failure imminant back up HDD" at BIOS loading screen and this was before I put anything on it, so I copyed over my old HDD to the new one and it seems to work fine except for that message at startup, can I correct this or is it nothing to worry about, I mean im using it right now with no problems, anyways thanx for any advice in advance

This message is going to be coming from your SMART status report, which is essentially a built in diagnostic tool for your hard drive. The hard drive will perform its own little tests and self monitoring, to help ensure that you have enough time to backup your data in the event that the hard drive should fail. Without knowing what the error code was (ie 1703), its hard to say what the problem is and whether or not you should see it effecting you now or later..or even if it will have any noticeable effect at all.

If you would like to know more about the issue, you can run a number of SMART reading programs, the most common being the Speed Fan software, or you could find a number of others through a simple web search. You can also run some hard drive diagnostic tools, such as Western Digital's own Data LifeGuard. You can download versions that would run from windows or off a bootable cd, and this software should be able to pick up any issues with the drive and tell you what to do with it.

But my advice at this point is to make sure you keep fresh backups of your critical data and consider replacing the drive under warranty.

If the drive is brand new, try and exchange it where you bought it. If that doesn't work, WD has a nice RMA dept, although you do have to pay for your own skipping costs (and I hope you saved the ESD bag, they won't take an HDD back without one). I certainly wouldn't put any unique important files on that drive, as you could wake up one morning and it could be dead.
