External HD unaccessible on one pc

hi

my external HD suddenly giving me the error message of unaccessible. when i connected it to my laptop it worked just fine. after finding no solution to the problem i tried to install a new windows copy (by the way im using xp) but the problem still remains.

when i looked at system management the HD appears as 100% free although it has over 50% of capacity full.

I WILL BE HAPPY TO RECEIVE ANY ADVICE.

Are you using Win XP on both the laptop and desktop computers?

Is this a network drive or USB? Are there special drivers required?

Don't use all caps, it is considered shouting.

I recommend going to the drive manufacturer's website and download a utilities program to run on the drive.

Win 7 still uses the NTFS file system,as I recall... unless you have encryption on...

You say other USB devices work on the XP laptop; do you get any messages about them such as "This device could run faster..."?
