DVD Writer

I'm doing a rough write up of my next systems specs. I was thinking about eventually getting a DVD Burner.

Whats a good make / model?

Can I use a DVD writer as my primary CD-ROM as well?
[I'll probably also be using a 52x lite-on CD-RW]

Arrow

i take it ur a n00b so ill give u the basics...

the best dvd burner ithink is the sony model that supports all types of dvds: dvd-r dvd-rw dvd+r dvd+rw etc
yes you can use a 52xliteon burner also...it doesnt really matter which is primary..but if they are on the same ide channel becareful b/c u probably wont get to effectively use them at the same time...so put one on another ide channel if possible for better performance...however if the one of the burners is on the same channel as the harddrive you wont be able to do "cached burns" and only "on-the-fly" burns

A noob to hardware, no. I built the PC I'm using right now, just never really cared enough about DVDs until now. I don't see the point in watching a movie on a $300 drive in my PC on a 17 inch screen, when I can go across the room and watch a movie on a bigger screen with a $100 DVD player. Just my opinion though.

However, as of late the DVD format actually became useful, lol.

I even had a drive in my last PC, but I never used it. Not even once. Came standard and I didn't really have any use for it.

My computer system is my Entertainment box...i would have my 60" tv hooked up to my comp!

get the sony writer or the pioneer writer.

In my opinion Pioneer makes the most reliable and best quality drive on the market

Of course, here you see my DVD-RAM drive mounted in a Speedzter5 enclosure. CD-R/RW; DVD-R/RW; DVD-RAM...all read and write....and finally DVD+R/+RW reading.

Pansonic DVD-RAM drive model #: SW-9571-CYY (LF-D521U OEM)

Write Speeds:
CD-R - 12x
CD-RW - 8X
DVD-R - 2X
DVD-RW - 2X
DVD-RAM 2X

DVD-RAM is the best format in my opinion because it is the most reliable (CPRM on disc) and has 100,000 rewrite ability, FAR greater than +RW and -RW.
