The Useful Freeware Database
The aim of this thread is to create a 'database' of freeware to help our users. It can be easily searched with the forum's search function, and serves a couple of purposes. It brings attention to various solutions to problems anyone may be having, and gives users information- if you need to reference a program, it's link will appear in the index, and that link will head to the specific post covering the program in question, as well as provide a place to download it.
If you want to add a program to this thread, please use the following as a template:

Adobe Reader is a program from Adobe that is designed to read PDF files. The PDF filetype was created by Adobe and Reader is the free version that allows users everywhere to open these files. Note that no changes can be saved to the PDF file with this free version, though data can be entered and then printed. This will also add a plugin to your internet browser, allowing Reader to open a PDF in your browser window.
Note that by default Adobe's download setup will install Adobe Album Starter and the Adobe Yahoo! Toolbar. Uncheck those options prior to downloading on the link supplied below:

CutePDF Writer

CutePDF Writer is a program that will install as a virtual printer. It is used for creating PDF documents out of just about anything that can be printed. To use it after it is installed, print as you normally would (i.e. File > Print) and in the pull-down menu select CutePDF Writer. It applies no watermarks or other imperfections, it just converts the original document into PDF format.

PDF Explorer is a PDF management tool. You can create databases of PDF files to make searching easier, and perform other actions such as batch renaming and image extraction.

DeepBurner is used for burning CD's. It allows you to burn audio CD's, data CD's and DVD's, ISO images, and bootable discs, it supports pretty much every DVD format, and much more. Check the website for details. It will also keep track of the space used on the disc and how much space you have left. It can also help you design labels and booklets for your discs.
Note: There is both a free version and a Pro version. I use this mainly as a free method to burn ISO's, but it is very useful all around. Just be warned that the freeware version does not contain all the functionality of the Pro version.

cd2iso will take a data CD and create an ISO from it. It creates a sector dump of the filesystem of any disc with a valid filesystem. As audio CD's contain no valid filesystem, this will not allow you to copy audio files. Protected game CD's will not extract properly, and there are no plans to implement it either.

ISOBuster allows you to open up and explore ISO's. This can be useful, but for dumping ISO's, I recommend cd2iso as it is much more straightforward and less confusing. It's also good for exploring CD's and DVD's, as it will allow you to use all filesystems on the media, not just the one the operating system selects.

PageDefrag is a defragmenter for an area of your harddrive most other defragmenters (including the built in Windows utility) don't touch. A quote from the SysInternals website:

One of the limitations of the Windows NT/2000 defragmentation interface is that it is not possible to defragment files that are open for exclusive access. Thus, standard defragmentation programs can neither show you how fragmented your paging files or Registry hives are, nor defragment them. Paging and Registry file fragmentation can be one of the leading causes of performance degradation related to file fragmentation in a system.
This program can check for fragmentation, and then based on the results, you can opt to do nothing, run at next boot, or run at every boot.

p7zip

p7zip is for managing file formats such as ZIP, RAR, RPM, gzip, and basically anything you'll need. It has its own p7 format which compresses 30% - 50% better than ZIP format.
Notes:
The download server is SourceForge.net. The link will open up to the p7zip package, it is recommended that you select the most recent version and make sure you download the binary, not the source.

ConceptWorld Piky Basket

Piky Basket is designed for Copying/Pasting multiple files and folders in Windows XP. Kind of like a clipboard for files, it allows you to select items to copy from multiple locations and paste all of them at once into the target directory. Piky Basket can also copy paths to the files for documntation and can open up the console (cmd.exe) in the folder you're working in. This means that instead of defaulting to C:\Documents and Settings\<current_user>\, it will open to the folder you are viewing.
