these arent exactly the best portable msn messengers, but they're close. they wont save setting simply because of the registry entries... WLM was called windows live mess (mess not messenger) by the creator of "portable version 7.5"
i havent quite tested bob_man_uk's suggestion, so i cant give feedback as of yet
7.5 for some reason always asks me to upgrade to the latest version, ergo, im not going to use it,
wlmlite is nice, doesnt install anything except for the reg key for something... or other, only downside of wlmlite is its inability to save your face picture, doesnt bother me since i dont actually have one but if you like to have your slightly scary grinning portrait in messenger, this maybe isnt your best shot
OH WLMlite also asks you to upgrade to the latest messenger version, but allows you to ignore it, unlike 7.5 which either kicked out if you said no or installed messenger if you said yes

just tried wlm, it deleted the registry entries oh my system's wlm. once i opened my system's wlm, it reinstalled itself and settings had been reset to default. no biggie, just use on systems without wlm, which is why its in usb key section in the first place

i never had that problem tbh with the registry keys and what not, like you said, only use it when wlm cant be installed or you dont want to leave your traces all over someone elses system

Dramatically? Depends on what you're doing.
There will be a difference. It would affect things a bit. But what you'll notice more of, I think, is the lack of "hard" memory; for example, by default, I believe Portable Firefox doesn't create a cache. Not for performance reasons - having a cache on a USB drive would certainly be better than no cache at all - but the flash memory in USB drives has limited write cycles, so to help preserve it, the cache is disabled.

Also, if you have write-ability to the hard drive of the machine you are using, then running the portable app(s) from the local hard drive will speed things up.

Generally speaking, portables apps don't perform any differently than native apps. An application loads into resident memory and executes from there. It's completely independent of the media it's loaded from. The only performance hit you'll get is in larger applications since it will initially be read from disk into memory and that process will take longer on USB. But we're largely talking about nanoseconds in most cases. It's typically completely negligible.
