Photo Album Scanning
So I have a huge task ahead of me, and want to make it as easy and fast as possible, I'm going to be scanning around 2500 photos from my photo albums.

I would like to scan around 5-6 at a time from the glass, but is there any open source or free software that can detect, then crop, and save all those images to a specified directory? Leaving me only to press scan and wait to load the next batch?

I recommend you Scan and Sort It Lite which scans and organizes documents, photos, exports them to JPG format, sends them via email to other users and attaches notes to scanned images.

Yes through Picasa you can crop your images and you can also share your photos. Download it and use.
