Nice knee jerk reaction.
This theory was featured on CBC's The Hour two weeks ago.

Nice post. It is interesting to see the "other" uses we have for oil, since so many people consider the price at the pump to be the major issue at hand.

I can't believe these are your reactions.
"err...." "spam" ...?
After spending atleast an hour reading the entire article (32 pages when printed), my views and concerns have been greatly altered. Maybe I'm a victim of someone's groundless ravings, but the facts given in the article are hard to "shove off." After investigating the website a little further, I discovered a link for a video of Congressman Roscoe Bartlett's address on the issue of Peak Oil to the US Houe of Representatives, found here. In Bartlett's presentation lasting over an hour, he quotes Matt Savinar, the author of the article of topic, numerous times.
It appears that this is a very serious issue and not just some guys ranting about the end of the world.
How can you deny the facts about our (the US and the world as a whole) massive dependacy on oil, and amount being comsumed compared to the amount available anyway?
Very intelligent people are monitoring these things. They know how much we've used in the past, how much we are currently using and how much we will need in the future. The numbers show the amount we'll need will soon surpass the amount available. It's not hard to see the problem, which is real.
Maybe I'm buying into this a little too much, but just think of this situation as a possibility. Think of how much we depend on oil. Not just for our gas, but everything. Machines that produce medical equipment, tractors that farm our food, vehicles that transport people and supplies; like the trains that haul materials for construction, the semi's that transport all the merchandise to retail stores, airlplanes, boats, even the humvees and tanks for the military. Think of what could happen if the oil to keep all these machines running, ran out? Life would come to a screeching halt like that article stated.
It makes a little more sense why we have troops over in Iraq and the Middle East now as well. If the supplies of oil do get very low, a war would be imminant.
After the fall of civilization as would know it, potentially occurs, think of what the world would be like? Think of how you would live in the absense of all modern technology. Without computers, refrigderators, conventional homes, any electricity. The world would go back to a time of cultivating our farms with oxen, that is, if anyone would survived.
Do you think China wouldn't be willing to initiate a nuclear attack against us to protect their most valuable resource? I wouldn't count on it.
I don't know what to say, maybe this is all unfounded speculation; but for all I know it could be the proclamtion of the end of the world. I have to little information to go on right now.
This article really makes you think though...

You're right G MIKE. I've never really been interested in politics or foreign policy, part of the reason is that I'm only 18 and I haven't really cared about anything like that, but when I read things like this article and see how dramatically it affects me (without sounding too selfish), the little I do know starts to connect and my interest is sparked. It makes me want to acquire as much information as I can so that I can understand it more.
I've always heard people make comments on the "real reason we're in Iraq", but I've never really paid any attention to it, but it all kinda makes sense now...

At the very least, this helps to explain why I've seen a greater focus on fusion research, to judge from the news stories I've read lately.

Fusion just makes more heat (and we're still using heat to move turbines damnit!).

Fusion is what powers the sun -- and if we get it working right, it will *produce* more energy than we put into it.

They've gotten fusion reactors to put out as much energy as put in...but the reaction just wont go on for that long. To tell you the truth, do we really actually know whats at the center of our sun? It could be some isotops of hydrogen we haven't seen yet...which would explain its longevity.

True enough. I'm glad to see that they're doing the research, though. We've made progress; to me that means we're learning something from it, and it's not a complete waste of money.
