We always make the prediction that aliens have ebtter technology than us. Have we ever thought that maybe we have better technology than them and that we might find them before they find us? Well at least we know there are no aliens (thus far) in our solar system, but remember we are one of trillions of solar systems out there. The chances are that we die out before they even find us, or we find them. |

My thoughts are that our solar system is fairly youngg.. under 5 billion years old, while our galaxy is estimated at 11 billion years, so if you consider it takes about 5 billion years to get where we are, there could be some other lifeforms with up to 6 billion years up on us. I like to think that while there could be younger life-froms, there could also be older lifeforms, too.
The times I listed aren't on the money- I kinda forget, it might be our universe is 14 billion yrs, but I do know our soloar system is right around 4 1/2 to 5 billion years. It would be too self centered to believe we are the culmination of life in something as vast as our galaxy, let alone our universe.

Here is another question: How did Earth evolve? Does anyone here believe in the Big Bang theory?

I am more drawn towards that theory than any other but I'm still not totally convinced.

I would have to agree.

Like I said, I think my times are off. It might be 5 billion or so, maybe 6.. but the bottom line is our solar system in less than 1/2 the age of our galaxy and certainly less than 1/2 the age of our universe, so some other sentient life most likely has a leg up on us.
Big Bang? Evidence kinda supports it regarding red-shift, but what about dark matter and dark energy purportedly making up over 90% of the mass and 95% of the energy in our universe? Still so much to learn; If I remember correctly, the current hypotheses support an 11 dimensional universe approximately 14 billion yrs old or so. |

True... they invaded first. The mastodonts, camels and horses were less than thrilled, I hear.

No.. thats what we rely on to survive. its shallow to presume every other living being HAS to have the same sort of atmosphere and proximity to stars etc... as us to survive. Life adapts, it doesnt appear where it's best for it to survive, it evolves. Thats a pathetic and very american idea. damn americans.

*sigh* Here we go, getting picked on again for being self-centric. I hardly think it's JUST Americans that picture intelligent life on another planet as being similar in some sense to ourselves; come on, we're the only living example we have! Would you blame a young child who has only seen dogs as living animals for expecting most animals to be sort of like dogs?
And when it comes to life (as opposed to "intelligent life") we've pictured it in a lot of places. The Mars rovers are looking for signs of it right now, and I remember hearing about a mission to one of Jupiter's moons that's going to look for it under non-H2O ice. I will admit, it's a real question whether we'll recognize life when we find it; we're so used to carbon-based life, would we recognize, say, silicon-based life forms? (I understand that such is at least possible; it just didn't evolve here, to our knowledge). |

Sorry to revive this post after 4 days, but I have an angle that no one has touched. Its the biblical angle. A full understanding of the bible suggest that in order for there to be other intelligent, jesus would have to have died on every other planet. I'm not saying that Planet GS3942934 in the G49dfdnd solar system doesnt have termites or mosquitos. I'm just saying that as a christian, I am forced to believe that there is no other intelligent life out there, short of angels, demons, satan and God. But... this is a religious stand point. I just wanted to offer that perspective.
