It allows continued usage of critical system components during a power outage for a very short period (minutes). The UPS supplies power through batteries which it keeps charged while there is power.
Typically a generator is used when a power outage is more than a few minutes. In these cases the generator will start up while and supply power to essential equipment while the UPS is used as a bridge to supplying power until the generator comes online. A backup generator normally supplies power from a petrol or diesel motor.
