PSU ruined computer?

Well, my computer smelled burned for several weeks... I have an Antec 300 watt PSU... Well, after some time it smelled really badly when I got home one day, and after some time it did not turn itself on at all. I guess that the PSU was the villian (or do other parts of the computer fail when the computer is turned off (but plugged in?).

So I turned my antec in for warranty and got a new, LC-cooling PSU in return (not sure if they even tested the old one as I got this one so quicklyin return so not even sure if the PSU was the problem).

But now that I plug in the new psu I still can't get the computer to power on... Did the old PSU ruin my motherboard? Should I just try to buy a new mobo or what?
I'm assuming the new PSU they gave me is working of course.

There is a good chance the the power supply did damage your motherboard.

There are some safety systems in place with most power supplies, but yes...if something went horribly wrong then everything connected to that power supply is at risk. From experience, generally the motherboard is going to be the most likely effected but I have had power supplies kill hard drives, video cards, optical drives, and so forth.

But what kind of symptoms are you actually getting. Are there any signs of life at all, do fans spin, leds light up, do you hear the hard drive spin up? Anything like that at all? If you are getting nothing at all it is possible the new power supply is a dud and your system is fine, in which case you simply test the power supply in another system or with a cheap $20 power supply tester. If the power supply turns out to be ok, then yes the motherboard is probably your failure point.

Thanks for the good answers.

Well, I'm getting no reaction at all... Nothing powering up, not even a single error beep heh.

Well, I tried the new PSU in another computer, and it worked without any problems.
So the problem is the mobo then I guess.

Have to try to get an old socket 939 mobo now then.
