Need Help ASAP

K, to make a long story short, I bought a new CPU cooler (thermaltake v1) and computer gaming case (thermaltake tsunami) and a new power cord for my 460w max power supply.

Only power to LED and read through the Intel manual on my d975xbx mobo and plugged everything right. So, I grabbed another power cord from this computer and the power cables from another tower for the 5v little prongs and blam! it fired up just fine. Went to BIOS to view my temp at 42C. Then i grounded myself (i do that everytime im gonna be near the mobo for precautions) and tried plugging in the little 2 prong HDD LED, and the others according to manual and all of a sudden, nothing.

Could this be in result of a bad power supply? I am looking at options and elimination possiblilities. Obviously my mobo and cpu arent fried and only get some power to display front 120mm LED fan. Do you also think that my power supply needs a makeover, due to it been used for 5 years as a government CPU?

Lastly, what would be a good suggestion in wattage for a new power supply? I have a 120mm in front and rear, 80mm side, and 120mm CPU cooler.

Wait... What?

Ok I think I have it.... So you have your PSU plugged in, try and start up and nothing. So you went and borrowed the power supply from another computer to test out and it boots fine? But even with this new power supply, when you plugged in the HDD LED light, it turned the computer off?

yeah, sorry to confuse you...hard to explain what i did, but had a local shop do a power supply test and found 1 pin out of the 24 (the -.5v) was not showing anything. So I went out bought a new power supply and it turns on just fine.

Now nothing displays at all on my screen, no Hard Drive sounds, DVD Rom light is on and functions ok, all led lights and fans turn on. I have tried the method where you take out all your RAM and power to Hard Drive and your supposed to hear a continuous beep, but nothing. I am assuming that my mobo is fried now...what a pain, lol.

Welcome to the world of computers

It does sound like your motherboard is shot though... or the PSU you bought is completely dead (unless you tested it at the store)

Also, make sure your motherboard isn't grounded. Before you run off and buy a new motherboard, pull everything out of your case and just set the motherboard on top of a cardboard box and set it up. All you need is the PSU, CPU, ram, and motherboard. You can get away with no drives for now. See if it will boot up at all for you. (Take a screw driver and connect the two power button pins to start it up)

Undervolting probably buggered the board allright. Remove add in cards apart from the gpu, try 1 stick of ram and if it boots, then me and bball are wrong. if not, were right that u have 1 dead board. was it the -5V or the+5V? or was it the 1.5V? the -5 is the ground, +5 is power(duh) and 1.5V goes to the CPU. Check the CPU too.

Aha! Found out the reason why my CPU wouldnt work. A friend on Xfire told me to take out the smaller mhz ram stick and tada! It fired up nicely.

Turns out the old Ram stick when i looked at is a PC4200, haha, go figure right? So I went back to the computer shop and picked up 2GB of PC6400 sticks and runs like a champ!

The PSU was shot, so i tried the brand new one from Okia and works fine too. Thank you all for helping me though. Now its upgrade time for this machine.

All my friends want me to build them PC's now and toss out their XBOX360, lol.

Rules when PC building - When ordering parts, make sure they are compatible, I've never had that problem because of that simple rule
