shift key

well, my shift key is busted. i have a (hp pavillian ze4400 laptop)...and the shift key is a piece of ...yeah. so, i tried to fix it and i damn near broke the key in half. i can not get the sucker back on. there isn't a metal rod or anything like that that i am having to deal with...just two plastic pieces of 'nothing' and the key. i dont know why it is so hard. any suggestions?

tried taking the shift key from the other side and it is too small. is there some kind of technique? lol i must be missing something! i have the key sort of on...but it wont fit on perfectly. i've had this problem before. is this something that i need to bring my computer into best buy for?

any help would be so great! thanks guys and gals1

Is the key actually broken, or is it simply popped off? If it's broken, you may as well get a new keybaord. They're not terribly expensive off eBay, but none too cheap from HP/Compaq. If you have a service plan with Best Buy or a warranty with HP/Compaq, take it in to them and make them fix it. Otherwise, you'd be better off fixing it yourself.

Just got back from Best Buy. They fixed it...sort of. All they did was put it half on so it works some of the time but I have to press down on it hard.

I thought the whole point of getting a $250 Warranty/Service Plan for this fucking computer was so that they would fix it if something were to ever happen...and I wouldn't have to pay up the ass for shipping and then for a labor fee. I dont know. Correct me if i'm wrong.

He said I would have to pay for it to be shipped, and then pay for the labor...because it looks like unintentional damage. UNintentional damage. Now, if it were intentional damage I can see why they would charge me but unintentional? Give me a break. It's been kind of messed up since I got the computer.

The dude said that there was a metal rod (or something like that) broken or bent and the key is cracked and because of this there was nothing they could do...they would have to send it to a repair shop.

Any suggestions on how I can fix this fucking thing myself, other than going to the store and stealing the shift key off of the display computer?

Edit: OH1 And it's not a keyboard that is seperate. It's one like...built into the laptop. Know what I mean/

Ugh. I'm so pissed right now. I dont really know why...oh wait, maybe because they blew smoke up my ass and had me buy every bell and whistle for this peice of crap and THEN decided to send me a bogus $250 warranty worth nothing.

Yeah, still open to suggestions.

Well, I dont know how you go about getting your computers fixed, Dream, but I think I'm going to pass. Whatever floats your boat, though!

Well, it just may come down to me having first my boyfriend call and bitch them out because...yes, I'll admit it...they aren't going to take any threats that a girl gives seriously. Then if that doesn't work I'll have my dad go in. They've jerked him around before when it came to this kind of thing and if he goes in hopefully they will do something about it.

I guess it's not such a big deal because there is another shift key but I only use the one that is broken. Which is unfortunate for me. I just don't know how to use the other one and for $250 I dont think I should have to learn.

Thank you Vinci for all the advice! I think I'm going to go ahead and do that.

Hope you get your keyboard fixed Jenn without incurring any additional charges. Some of the companies out there are just ripping us off.

Jenn,

Don't be meek. Men are scared shitless of angry females; just don't take no for an answer. Refuse to pay for the shipping fees, etc. Demand to speak with a manager and let them know you will be in there EVERY SINGLE DAY, right at the counter, and if your problem isn't fixed YESTERDAY with a BIG SMILE and an apology you will be on the phone with your lawyer, the BBB, the attorney general, and you will make it an express point to be a damnable nuisance at Best Buy for the rest of your life.

Don't swear and scream, etc. - just be damned serious, stern, to the point, and let them know that NO is NOT ACCEPTABLE. Don't even let them think there is the option of you paying a single penny for the fix.

And make a point of explaining the situation very loud and clear; hopefully a manager will realize that you're scaring away tons of potential customers because of their unwillingness to back up their product.

If all else fails, make a point of visiting the laptop section every weekend and tell every customer in the aisl about your experience. BB will get the point; if they don't, they're dumber than dirt.

Good luck, corps. suck sometimes I feel ya.
