SATA Optical drives????
Why are there still not any decent SATA drives? At newegg all they have is the plextor but that doens' tlook to be a solid device. It got some pretty bad reviews on the egg. Anyone have any idea why theres still nothing of quality to adapt to the new interface?

Personally I see no point in using a SATA optical drive.
As far as I know the cd and dvd drives aren't hindered by the IDE interface. Plus theres the extra load on the SATA controller thats not to desirable if you have a raid or multiple HDDs running.

I don't think there are any, and I highly doubt that there will be for a looooooong time. See, all that manufacturers are likely doing when they have a SATA optical drive is putting a bridge chip on a native IDE interface, which costs money and reaps no benefits so to keep costs low they probably skimp on the other hardware. All boards have four IDE channels and have had them for the last 10 years and they will likely remain for a long time to come and then be used exclusively for optical drives. Just like floppy drives have their own connectors, optical drives and hard drives do now too. It's not a bad idea to keep IDE for that, imo. So in short, no, there are no good SATA optical drives and with good reason.

i know my computer class did some tests on hardware, and we tested a sata and ide optical. couldnt see much of an advantage. oh yeah the main reason satas arent being developed is....the matrix is real

I personally still use IDE for everything because I am to broke at the moment to justify buying new SATA drives.
I dont even use rounded cables I just find other ways to run them out of the way of my airflow.

well, you wont get much airflow change, unless you route it around your computer wierd or wire them out of hte way, but if they are just hanging straight to the drive to mobo, then your not gonna get a huge diff, from rounded ide cables. you might even have a better airflow if you use rounded because they are round and air can curve around it, if you use sata then they might try to take off like and airplane wing.r

do what I do. zip ties to put the wires together and hot glue to the bottom'sides of the case. Hot glue, zip ties, duct tape, electrical tape, and zelcro wire ties (if you have them) can make any case empty.
