I suppose I should try that. Thanks Arrow17 and Mrs. Hey, keep'em coming! ![]() Btw, I have a friend who suggested that it might be something physically wrong with the mouse, like a loose cable or something... Haven't been able to test that out; I just thought I'd mention it. Take it easy all, Chunky |

ok, I've narrowed the situation down to it just being the mouse, or motherboard. I really doubt its my mother board, because when I have my USB ball mouse and my USB Intellimouse Optical polugged in at the same time, regardless of which USB or PS/2 port, the ball mouse still works when the Optical goes out. this happens as well in windows 98 and linux.
so its the mouse. I've had it for a few years, its a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 Optical for USB. is this further proof that Microsoft sucks or could my optical LED just be dirty? that would not explain why I cannot click or why the light goes out completely. Perhaps EMI from my Computer with its Acrylic case finally got to it over the years and is finally doing its damage, What is the life expectancy of a 60 dollar Microsoft Mouse from a few years ago? I'd expected this thing to work forever like all the other mice I have from the early 90s... |

Got the same problem here, since I installed my new gfx card (6800 GT @ 400/1100)
Maybe it has got to do something with my power supply? |

Having the same problem as everyone else. I too have a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 Optical for USB... but it just keeps on dying on me. I have tried another optical mouse in the ps/2 slot but that seems to have some problems as well. The ps/2 mouse seems to stick in place, and access commands on the keyboard... for examp the Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights will go from being on to off. I have tried updating my drivers for both mice, but they still continue to lock up or die out on me.
Any help would be much appreciated. |

I was told that it may be my motherboard, and I may have to replace it. |

look up 'mouse lag' on the steam forums steampowered.com. there's some useful tips there.

I have the same problem.
I have a PS/2 Microsoft IntelliMouse and IBM keyboard. Neither are optical or wireless. My motherboard is GA-7vt600-rz. The problems started occuring after I enabled USB2.0, updated to the latest BIOS, and updated to the latest VIA drivers. I've since reformatted my harddrive and reinstalled Windows 98SE and all the old drivers, as well as the original BIOS, but the problem still persists. I've noticed that the mouse and keyboard are especially likely to freeze when there is a disc in the CD/DVD drive and it is spinning. Hope somebody figures this out soon. |

MOusing functions time-share on the processor along with everything else. If you lose mousing ability for a few moments while the computer is searching, uploading or downloading with one of your drives, then that means the processor is currently occupied elsewhere. Chances are there is a buffer that has recognized your commands and is waiting for the CPUs attention. When the processor does get the data, the cursor/pointer/whatever will track each of the commands you put in... it will go crazy for another moment. If you feel this is unreasonable behavior, then I suggest you examine your system-- how much memory do you have? Are you doing too much paging in and out of virtual memory because you have too little available RAM? How fast is your system? I feel like my Pentium II systems are slow as hell and it's because I've been spoiled by the Pentium IVs I use. As always, do a sweep of your system for spyware/malware. Use one or both of those terms in a search of these forums for more information on that.

It stops working completely until I reboot. I consider this unacceptible behavior. Quote:
