Major keyboard and mouse problems
Greetings!
OK, I was using my computer as usual, when my keyboard and mouse both stopped working. I rebooted, but the problem is persisting despite all my attempts to resolve it. I've tried replacing the mouse with a different one (replacing it while the power is off, then rebooting), but that doesn't have any effect. I ran a virus check about an hour before the problem occurred but came up with nothing so virus activity seems unlikely.
The main problem is that I can't enter BIOS or load Windows in Safe Mode since the keyboard doesn't work at any time, even during start-up. I've even tried loading the computer with a MS-DOS boot floppy disk, but the keyboard wasn't working at the end of that either. All I can think of now is that my motherboard is completely knackered, but if someone can come up with anything that might work I'll be both very impressed and eternally grateful.

if what jazzy suggested arn't the case, I think your left with dead ports on your mobo, its possible that you fried them out somehow. you could either get a new mobo or try and solder on new ports from an old mobo, etc. Windows has nothing to do with the problem because your keyboard and PS/2 mouse are controlled by the mobo. I would try useing a USB mouse and keyboard, if they work then you know its your ports.

I've got a similar problem I could use some help with. Neither keyboard or mouse will work when the machine is booted into Windows, BUT I CAN get into the BIOS and use the keyboard there. Thinking it was a Windows issue, I formatted the hard drive and re-installed Win98SE. Both mouse and keyboard worked the first half of the install, but when the machine re-booted the second time, the mouse and keyboard no longer work. I am baffled! Suggestions? Opinions? Thanks!

Keyboard/Mouse not working
Hello there, I have also experienced the same problems as PAM713 whereby the keyoard/mouse only work is bios or up to the XP screen, at logon, nothing functions, however I can connect via remote desktop and control my pc from my laptop with no problems, the only thing tha I did between it working and not working is download updates from Symantec.
Please Help

Damian, check your BIOS. I finally found the answer to my problem -- there was a setting in the BIOS for a "User Password". Never seen anything like it before, there was no login box, nothing to indicate a password was needed. All it requires is those 4 letters typed at the keyboard once it finished booting up and it seemed to "unlock" the keyboard and mouse. Weird.

My computer has also got a big problem with the mouse and keyboard. I plugged in a cordless keyboard and mouse which worked for a little bit and stopped working. I plugged in my old keyboard and mouse and they would not work at all. I've tried resetting the computer but they still dont work.I cannot access my workspace. Ive plugged an optical mouse into the port and the light comes on underneeth but nothing else works.
Ive also tried the usb ports but no luck.

what were the 4 letters you used, I am having the same problems and in the BIOS I set up a password, and typed it in when I had to type in something, but it didn't work When I rebooted, and tried to go into the BIOS it asked me for tha password from before, so I had really created a password for just entering the BIOS. Please help!

i have also just had this problem. i was on my comp, with word, aim, and IE running and suddenly my mouse and keyboard just froze. i have a logitech freedom cordless duo with the mouse in the serial port and the keyboard in the usb port. i also had the station for an ati remote wonder controller in another usb port in the rear. i have 2 front usb ports as well and at this time i was connecting my external HD and that was the moment it all froze. now mind u my computer continued to work perfectly, with ims being sent and the cd icon coming on next to the mouse pointer in reference to the cpu reading the HD. but the Hd windows explorer never came up and i thought i had to restart so i did. when i did this and throughout the next 200 times i restarted, it said there was no keyboard detected and i couldnt press delete to go to setup, f1 as it said after the keyboard phrase or f8 to get into safemode. on my stattion for the wireless duo, there are different lights denoting different things. when i just plug in the ps/2 mouse the right light comes on n i press the connect button n the bottom light flashes which means it is trying to connect. however when i plug both the ps/2 mouse and usb keyboard in the right light comes on but nothing happens when i press the connect button. nothing happens also when i plug only the usb keyboard in. when i plug the usb keyboard into the front usb port the bottom light comes on staticly only, no flashing and no other light. im thinking maybe my usb ports are fried but if so then why would the lights on the wireless station still be on and why wouldnt my mouse work if its plugged into the serial port? could both the usb and serial be fried at the same time? i have tried the mouse in another computer and it works but not yet keyboard. it is so necassary to get some answerts to this as i am at college and need my comp for much of my work. any help in solving this would be met with much respect and praise. thank you

Couldn't even get into the machine to do that. Turns out I had a virus that destroyed everything, had to write off 160Gb hard drive and get replaced under warranty, i had Norton 2005 installed and Norton Firewall, but somehow it still managed to get through....
