it is possible to repair speakers as long as its only the wiring, anything inside the speaker itself i wouldnt bother, you say jiggle the jack or cable? if its the external cable then you should be able to get away with, snipping the jack off, stripping the wires and re-attaching another one or the old one (depending on how much cable is left on the jack end) if its inside the wires may need re-soldering back to the speaker/jack socket... open the thing up and take a look for any signs of the solder coming away, ive had plenty of speaker troubles where the solder has come away from the jack socket.

yeah... duct tape will suffice for external cables... just, i usually use a terminal connector strip (see here) and wrap that in duct tape, that way if theres any pull on the cable, its not gonna come apart very easily.

i dont recommend using duct tape because it is not a good electrical insulator. electric tape is better thought. by not insulating the wires correctly you can get interference in your signal. sometimes it is not noticable and sometimes it can be a pain, it depends how peaky and tolerent are the speakers and sound card. sometimes those kind of wires are very hard to solder because they have a protective layer of what ever it is called, but usually you can see because it has a color tint. those protective layers are used to protect againts short circuit inside the wire as the wires are touching each other. if you have that sort of wire good luck soldering it. sometimes it works by heating them up alot with the soldering iron, it will melt the protective layer , but be carefull because if you heat to much the wire will get damaged.

if the cables are protected then wouldnt removing the cover be better? i usually find that kind of cable protection in headphones... not that ive tried to repair any. your right though finch... i was only recommending soldering if he was opening the whole thing up... not soldering 2 end wires together. in my experience just putting a blob of solder where it has already been soldered before is difficult enough

well i was assuming the problem was near the jack. you are right we see often that kind of layer on headphones BUT i have seen some on speakers aswell. if the output wire is small enough their will be that kind of layer. i am the kind of person that if i have a problem in the wire somewhere, even if i know exactly where, i will change the whole wire from the begining to the end with a bigger and better wire, a new jack and solder that.
