What are your indications when you try to restart it shortly after it shuts off?
It sounds like a heat issue, with the possible exception of the whole needing to tilt it thing, certainly not likely to be a drive problem; unless you have other symptoms to add?

Yeah, the angle thing is weird.
Is a fan getting jammed or something, and holding it at the right angle relieves pressure enough to let it spin? Or maybe excessive heating is causing some board/connection to flex/expand, which isn't making a good connection or is shorting unless you hold it right? Doesn't sound like a drive issue, though, I agree with Dngrs. |

a tap where the hdd is starts it, but it only works for half an hour. the temps are normal. i took the hdd out and booted the machine. it boots first time without hdd(bios display), but with the hdd in, it wont boot first time.

Ah... so perhaps this is a connector issue. I have a similar problem with one of my laptops-- the case flexes and the optical drive drops off. Heating the case makes it even looser, and many of these laptop designs don't take that kind of thing into account when they design the locking mechanisms for removable modules.
I'd eyeball the connectors on the hard drive and in the laptop, see if there is any significant tarnishing or arcing (yeesh). Try a little Deoxit, maybe, make sure you have your screws all secured, etc. If you can find the are that's too loose, maybe try to pad it out a little with some duct tape or build up a worn area of plastic with a little epoxy. |

i was going to say, the case did get a bit cracked. can you get ide extender cables? The Hitachi HDD does go in a little loose. I was going to experiment with the second bay (its got UltraBay I think), if it doesn't, ill pop in an extender if they're available. if that fails, ill have to check the mobo for connection damage. the hdd doesnt sit in the mobo tray like most gaming lappy's, its in the side of the case and could possibly be the cause. thanks
the hdd is allright chkdisked it, so ill give it a go if ide cables are available. This could be a fun day with the screwdriver ![]() |

off the wall suggestion: have you tried running it without the battery in? Simply plugged into the wall with no battery or replacement battery. Though I've usually seen shorter uptime than 30 minutes.
