Mounting comparison

Im curious as to how the heat sink mountings have changed between various incarnations of the intel procs... i have a P4 and i wanna get a new cooler for it but its getting tough to find a selection of p4 coolers.

Need to know whats compatable if at all or what can be jurry rigged.

I know a few of ya will say get a new computer... id love to, but i cant afford it atm. plus i wanna keep this one on the side anyway. I want something to replace my water cooling system with similar performance. it works good but it requires maintenance which i dont have much time to do.

You're pretty much limited to heatsinks that are 478 compatible, really, either by clipping onto the retention bracket or screwing through the holes on the board. LGA775 has holes that are closer together and make a square rather than a rectangle, rigging up a 775 cooler to fit 478 would be pretty damn difficult.

There are always plenty of 478 coolers on ebay though, if you dare look there

Oh, and what maintenance do you have to keep doing? In 2 years of water cooling all I had to do was top it up every 4 months or so..
