Installing a CPU cooler on an nVidia 8800GTS?
Hi there,
I have an nVidia 8800GTS with a stock heatsink installed on the lower side of the card. While looking at custom heatsinks, I noticed that many can be mounted both on top and bottom, suggesting that cooling is beneficial on both sides of the card. I recently found an unused Pentium III heatsink and fan that looks like this: ww-w.oc.com.tw/article/0010/ct17.jpg (remove the dash) It has never been used and the thermal paste is fully intact. Is there a way (makeshift if necessary) to install the heatsink onto the top side of my gfx card while leaving the stock heatsink on as well. I also have a 45mm CPU fan (no heatsink) that is also not being used. Is it possible? I don't want to spend any extra money on custom heatsinks, but if it's possible to do something with what I have, I'll be glad to do it. |

Cooling the backside of the card won't do you any good... Most of the heatsinks you see with multiple mounting options only do that so you can free up some pci-e slots. Like the thermalright coolers, you can positions the fins above the card to get them out of the way, however the only place this cooler makes contact with the card is over the gpu, it is in no way cooling the topside of the card.
There are a few coolers that will provide a metal plate for the back of the card over where the ram chips are but these hardly do anything. Don't both wasting your time trying to figure out how to mount this as you won't notice any difference in performance.
