Homemade THERMAL COMPOUND
hi
my cpu temperature at normal condition is like 60+ all the time....i think the problem is that i didn't use a thermal compound, so what i did was mixed vaseline and talc and used it!! nw the temp is down below 50....still not appreciable though but i guess that's good enough mainly because i am not using the fasteners that came with the cooler..... so, my question is whether if using a thermal compound made out of VASELINE & TALCUM POWDER do any harm ?? P.S. my processor is P4 3Ghz |

lol, i suspect you are full of it, however it is possible you are noob enough to think that as long as it's creamy & white, then it is good enough
i think that answers the question, but just in case it doesn't no, your mix is not good enough, some standard grease is good enough, artic silver ceramique is excellent, whilst still very safe & easy to use your cpu will die if it overheats, and running at high temperatures will shorten it's life much more than normal. i can't believe such a shocking mixture doesn't make the pc shutdown very quickly from overheating |

Yeah, your cpu will then have a ring of confidence! LOLOL ![]()

actually i got a ZALMAN 7000B-Cu cooler and couldn't wait to try it....but sadly i couldn't manage to get neither the fasteners nor the thermal compound with it(long story), so thats why i tried it without the fasteners. one more question, i was planning on using toothpaste with vaseline but i found out that the fluoride in it could cause corrosion , i suppose talc wouldn't cause any such trouble or would it ? |

If you are really not able to find/buy thermal grease for whatever reason then read this link.----------------------->Linky
You never did state the reason for not getting any thermal compound from the store......... |

... or, you could throw down $2 at Radio Shack for some cheap thermal compound until your AS5 order comes in.

Yes, it is very possible, in fact, highly probable, that you are wrong. You would be a better person if you would just admit that. And I would be less annoyed. ![]() "I like doggies....and apparently dinousaurs, mostly because they eat cats!" --Nilpo |

I guess not. The only problem with Talc that I can see is that the additives (like perfume) may harm its performance, but I think it's an interesting idea. Also, we don't really know how well petroleum jelly (or Vaseline in particular) stand up to constant cycles of being heated up and cooled down, or if they do eventually dry out. If you can clamp the heatsink down, the little bits of talc may well even crush out so everything becomes very thin - it may work very well. I reckon this needs some proper testing. Who's got a thermal probe, a hot CPU and some Vaseline and talc laying around? ![]() |

ha ha , testing huh !! well im tryin .....actually now the temperature is within the limit....below 50....touching 46 most of the times, that's a good 10 deg lower than wihout the mixture !....i need to find a way to clamp the heatsink tighter on to the processor, the temperature'd definitely go even down then, hopefully. |
