Yes, still reading thread
How about Aluminum Anti-sieze compound.
Ya'll aren't the only ones with the idea of $1 vaseline though. I bet if you don't put a huge glob on there like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, it won't go anywhere unless you are trying to catch your PC on fire. |

Interesting...
Well, I started pondering this subject when I saw Snod Blatter's response with "needs proper testing."
So, I attempted to test it. I used a few different things around the house here, but the combination that seemed to work the best was Pepto Bismol and baby powder. Mixed it into a taffy-like substance and put a dab on my CPU and reattached the heat-sink. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on the machine, ran all of the updates, and even fork-bombed the system to see what the processor would do. The system crashed, but the processor never overheated. Hit the reset button and went the the bios. CPU temp: 41C. After everything, it barely went over 40C. I think this is a pretty good solution, although I'm still going to put legitimate thermal compound on it. If you're in a bind, I think this would be a great temporary solution. CPU is a Althlon XP 2400+. |

Yeah, it would be much the same deal as regular paste, just a bb size blob, spread it or squeeze it out. The burn in time on it would be nearly instant. If you get the good stuff with a high distillation rating, looks white as opposed to the cheap yellow stuff' its flash point is really high. No flames. But that's simply recapping things already covered. |
