Hey, duff151,
Welcome to our forums. First-- here's the quick answer: BIOS. Second-- here's a lil' bit longer answer: You install a stand-alone software that "grabs" the internally measured temperatures and reports those to you. Many of them are freeware such as: Motherboard Monitor, SpeedFan, CoreTemp, Sandra, Everest. Third-- here's a lengthy 4 page article that I wrote on this subject: Measuring Temperatures with Thermal Probes and External Sensors. It covers everything from BIOS, motherboard, and software readings up to external thermal probes and discuss the most reliable strategies to measure your temperatures as accurately as possible. The concepts are explained in a highly comprehensible way - it's also explained how the BIOS and those stand-alone softwares "grab" the data and interpret the temperatures from the onboard and in-built sensors. Consequently, the most frequent sources of errors are pointed out alongside with possible workarounds. If by any means you end up requiring a better cooling or just want to read about computer cooling then you might as well read my Adequate Cooling article-series: Introduction, Sequel, and Extreme. All in all, don't hesitate to ask questions because we are a technology-savvy community and together we do our best to solve technical troubles and software dilemmas of this computing generation. For GPU's RivaTuner is one of the best choices.

For all software-based readings, I've grown to really like HWMonitor.
You don't have to install it, just unzip and run.. It reads your mobo temps, graphics card temps, voltages (though we all know those readings aren't worth the pixels used to display them, right?) and even the temperature of your hard disk. It's much like Speedfan, I suppose, but less cluttered. I just think it needs more recognition is all.. ![]() |

I have Riva Tuner but I can;t seem to locate where it shows the temps though it's probably right in front of my face. As for Everest, does it run on Vista?
