Advice on making vaio all in one pc quiet
Hi Guys.
I have a vaio all in one pc and the noise has become rather loud and the temperature of the CPU was rather high.
I have stripped it down and cleaned all the dust out and replaced the TIM on the all the heatsinks in the pc and now it runs 20 degrees less but still the fans kick in and be rather noisy.
I am looking for some ideas on how to reduce the fan noise.
Is there replacement quiet fans or larger heatsinks to replace fans.
Do these fans work on12v and if so would the trick to reduce them to 7v work?
Any other ideas would be great. The noise is driving me mad

You should only put a very thin layer of thermal paste on. It should only be enough to fill the microscopic defects in the surface to provide heat transfer any more and it reduces the heat transfer as it then has to also conduct the heat through a solid layer of thermal paste. Also make sure you clean off all the old thermal paste.
If your fan is noisy after checking that there is not too much thermal paste and you have cleaned out all airways of dust then your fan might just be worn out.
If you try to reduce the voltage to the fan you will reduce it's cooling efficiency (lower airflow) and the CPU will heat up more and the control circtuitry for the fan will just try to make it run faster. This will most likely end up with your CPU or other components overheating.

Thank you for the reply m8.
I am a qualified pc repair technician although i dont work in this area now and i have already reduced the temp of the cpu by 20 degrees with the work i have done. I know i have replaced the TIM correctly and i am aware of the affect of undervolting the fans.
I was hoping someone has already dealt with this problem and has came up with a good solution already other than buy a new sony heatsink and fan. I bought the pc second hand so i dont know what the noise levels from a new one should be.
Cheers.

The model is vpcl13s1e
I have tried to source the fan using the part number on the fan but this search brings up the heatsink and fans in one unit. The fans are panasonic.

I can't find any info re the fans. What is the model number on the fan and do you have a picture of it? you will need to post the picture on an image web site and just type in the link to it here as text since you do not have enough posts to post pictures.
You can also always try calling a local sony service agent to get a price from them for the part and if they know of a replacement to lower the noise level.

I can see you dilema with that site.
Do you have the part number that is on the fan plus its distance between mounting holes and fan thickness.
I am sure there are other high quality fans that we should be able to locate without too much trouble.

i sourced a fan with the exact dimensions but the fan is a 0.33A instead of a 0.34A.
i thought the difference of 0.01A was worth a shot. I got if for £7.15 inc postage from USA
if it does work ok then i will order a second as there are 2 of these.

 | That difference in power consumption should not be a problem. Airflow and max rpm are more important to match (or possibly exceed on airflow).
