4 Pin to 3 Pin?
Hey again
well, i bought the Asus P5k-SE (sadly).
and , well, it seems Asus uses a 4 pin connector to the CPU
fan (claiming a new method to control speed).
problem is , i've never seen a 4 pin fan (i got the Zalman CNP 7700).
now it's not loud, but i still want to be able to play with the speeds, or atleast use the 'nap' feature..
any ideas on what to do in such situation?
i've though about connecting the cpu fan to the Chasis connector (which is 3 pins), but it's too far away, AND under the 3d card :S
thanks in advance

no big deal, you can plug the 3 pin fan plug into the 4 pin on the board... the 4th pin is only for the fans that use it.
I have it this way on my system.

Screwballl is right. Any fan can be powered on with 3 only pins. The 4th pin is unnecessary in terms of functioning. All that it does has to do with PWM (Pulse-width modulation), on which voltage-regulation is based. Voltage regulation, PWM in a nutshell, is the core of fan speed control. Summing these up, the 4th fan has to do with the PWM algorithm, voltage regulation scheme of the motherboard (on-board fan controller), and without that pin, the fan will be always on (100% efficiency).
Exceptions may occur, really old traditional motherboard may still be compatible with the classic 3-pin voltage regulation / speed control scheme. If yes, then you won't notice any difference. But chances are low. Nowadays every half-decent board is based on the 4-pin PWM since ages... it's cheaper dropping an old technology.

The 4 to 3 really won't make much difference...
the 3 wires are positive, negative (ground) and speed sensor. The 4th wire is the actual fan speed adjustment which has to be built into the fan or controller to adjust it at all.
Really if you want a fan speed adjuster, get something liek THIS
