well then I'm sorry but you're among a very few that predict that.
Think about it. Almost all businesses / institutions didn't switch to Vista. They're all still using XP, which has had the longest lifespan of a version of Windows. They're ALL going to upgrade to Windows 7. Even if they don't want to, M$ will finally kill off XP when 7 comes out, I can promise you that. |

i think the lifetime cycle will have to take a bit longer with XP than it did with 98 but im sure it wont die quite as easily (or as difficult depending on how you look at it) as 98 did.
saying that i did have a single install of windows 7, aero looked good, the taskbar annoyed the hell out of me,it seemed to work better than vista but it still used a lot of resources, i promptly turned off all the gubbins (right click computer, advanced settings, performance settings) so it was back to the grey old windows style taskbar, and oh surprise resources come flooding back :P i know microsoft are trying to kill off the old style start menu but i love it so much. as for linux im using it right now on a second machine, i managed to muster some life out of my athy board (after letting it dry out some) and its now in my living room folding and bein my IM/IRC dogsbody, i only just put linux on it today but chose kubuntu 8.04 purely for the kde3 interface, which again uses the similar start menu of 9x, but also supports nomachine, where as the newer versions with kde4 it doesnt work quite so good which moves me onto the updating bit nicely, kubuntu has a very nasty habbit of updating when i dont want it to, when i fresh install from the disk i do update and apply any and all security patches, but now it keeps trying to upgrade me to the newest release of kubuntu, which i know doesnt work with the addon software i like to use. as for heardware support i find linux still has a lot of wireless gremlins, i recently bought a wireless dongle but the chipset wasnt supported on linux so i took it back (ndiswrapper didnt work either before the comments come) summary... i like linux but only there to do the easy stuff because i havent got the energy sometimes to fix what was fine 12 hours prior. windows is again fine, but the glassy effect just doesnt do it for me when all i need is a big fat blue taskbar and green start button ![]()

After I installed Windows 7 I noticed that it was using the generic VGA driver. That was to be expected since laptops have more proprietary drivers. Since my laptop is over 4 years old it does not have any support from HP for even Vista. The only video driver available was for Windows XP. Fortunately that worked fine in Windows 7. Since Windows 7 is built upon Vista it seems much more mature than the betas that were out three years ago for Vista. When it is released it should be fairly stable and gain better acceptance than Vista. Maybe that will be enough to get the holdouts to finally switch from Windows XP and 2000. |

My experience with operating systems tells me that I can no longer afford to simply keep buying the "new" operating system every year or two. So I'm sticking with Vista, which works just fine for me. I'm tired of spending hundreds of dollars on "upgrades."

i wish ms wouldn't charge so much for their os's. not too many people can afford $400 for a oopy of windows 7. this is why people pirate windows all the time. if they were to switch to the apple pricing scheme--$130 for 3 licenses--i would definitely put 7 on all of my computers. only one will be getting it at this rate.

I think that Windows 7 is just Vista with changes made to address most of the complaints people have had with Vista. If you already have Vista then there is no need to upgrade to Windows 7 since under the hood Windows 7 is probably 99% the same as Vista. Windows 7 is mainly targeting the holdouts that are still running pre-Vista OSs. It will be trying to negate the negative reaction that some people had to Vista when it came out.
